It has been a long time but the feel-good factor has returned to Villa Park. Aston Villa are back in the Premier League. It has been a turbulent three seasons in the Championship both on and off the pitch. But on May 27th 2019 Villa’s fortunes changed for what we hope will be for a long forseeable future. A heroic 2-1 victory against Derby County at Wembley saw them win what is touted at football’s most valuable prize, the EFL Championship Play-off Final.
Their path to glory was not easy. Facing the prospect of a mid-table finish, Dean Smith’s men needed nothing short of a miracle to pull back a large points deficit and make it to the coveted play-off berths. But with a fully fit Jack Grealish back in the team, and a newly found can-do mentality, Aston Villa went on to win a record breaking 10 games on the trot and comfortably make it to the play-offs with two games to spare. A mouthwatering semi-final against local rivals West Bromwich Albion awaited them.
During the latter part of Villa’s Championship campaign, one of the most influential components of the team’s success was the role of Villa Park’s “Twelfth Man” aka The Holte End. The ear perforating sound of 13,000-strong Villans cheering every kick and every tackle was fundamental in Aston Villa’s push for their promotion prospects and in my latest painting, I pay homage to each and every single one of you, from your role at fortress Villa Park to your final push at Wembley.
This momentous time deserved a momentous artwork. I have lovingly created a vibrant acrylic painting of Villa’s twelfth man, The Holte End.
